Day 11: Mixture - Montreal, QC

We went straight to downtown by subway this morning. It started our start of sightseeing in Montreal. One the way to downtown, we found everything was written and annouced in French. In terms of English, some people were speaking English fluently, others had some accent or were not able to speak English at all. It was quite interesting to see and feel how this country has been developed and formed.



Summary:
Highlights:
1. Historic City --- Very nice old road made by stone. The main spot for us was definitely the Basilique Norte-Dame (http://www.basiliquenddm.org/en/)where Celine Dion held her wedding. It was massive and the interior was nicely done in blue.

The other spots we visited were 1. Chapelle Norte-Dame-de-Bonsecours 2. Historic City in general etc. We were amazed by each building we saw there. The city definitely attracts people.

2. Quartier Latin / Plateau-Mont-Royal --- These areas were quite nice and fasionable. There were many restaurants and nice old houses along the streets. We really enjoyed being there and having coffee at a cafe.

3. Oratoire St. Joseph - http://www.saint-joseph.org/en_1001_index.php
We went back our accommodation from downtown and drove to Oratoire St. Joseph. It was built on the hill and therefore had a nice view from the huge deck. We saw a beautiful sunset as well as coloured leaves from there. The building was quite modern. Although we did not enjoy driving Montreal (busy, definitely different from Victoria), this really made us relax.

今日は、朝から地下鉄に乗って、モントリオールの観光に出かけました。
街では標識はフランス語、人々も基本はフランス語を話します。英語という点に関していえば、綺麗な英語を話す人もいれば、アクセントのある英語を話す人、全く英語の話せない人がいたりして、カナダというひとつの国で、こんなに違うのかと不思議な気分になりました。

ハイライト：
1.旧市街　---　古い石畳の街並み。メインはなんといってもあの、セリーヌ・ディオンが結婚式を挙げた事でも知られるノートルダム大聖堂。とても古くて大きな教会で、コバルトブルーで照らされる祭壇がとても綺麗でした。

あとは、旧市街にあるもう１つの教会、ノートルダム・ド・ボンスクール教会を見て、街並みをぶらぶら歩いて回りました。一つ一つの建物がとても大きく、石作りの建物が他のカナダの都市とは雰囲気が全く違って面白かったです。

2.カルティエ・ラタン、プラトー・モン・ロワイヤル

フランスで難しく聞こえますが、お洒落なショップやレストランが並ぶ通りと、その近くにある可愛い雰囲気の住宅街。カフェでお茶をしてぷらぷら歩くのが楽しいエリアでした。

3.聖ジョセフ礼拝堂
ダウンタウンから一度宿に戻り、今度は車で郊外にある聖ジョセフ礼拝堂に行きました。モントリオールの最高地位に建てられた礼拝堂で、中は意外にもとても現代風の造りをしていて驚きました。礼拝堂の中には展望台も設けられていて、そこからは紅葉した街と夕日がとても綺麗に見えて、モントリオールの車の運転はなかなか大変でしたが、来ておいて良かったです。
