Day 18: Good bye Canada, Hello US - Niagara Falls, ON - Ann Arbor, MI

Finally, we left Canada for US today. We really enjoyed the road trip in Canada and were truly amazed the people, places, nature that we encountered during this trip. We really hope that we have the same feeling for the US part after completing this trip.

Good friends of ours Mike and Sonia have recommended us that we go to a restaurant chain called Cora. The first restaurant was founded in Quebec and has been quite successful in the east coast. (They've started getting into the other part of Canada as well.) Although we wanted to go to Cora for the last 10 days, we were not able to do so because of the time crunch and a schedule conflict etc. Anyway, finally we made it in Niagara Falls. Cora restaunrants are only open for the breakfast and lunch only. Especially, their breakfast is what they are famous for. To make a long story short, it was quite good. We loved it!

2. US part of the road trip has began!
The customs at Sarnia was the best one we have ever went through in the US. The entry was so smooth and the officer was friendly. After getting into the state of MI, we drove about 2 hours and got to the friend's place in Ann Arbor, MI. We have been treated wonderfully and really feeling to be happy to be here. We will stay here until Sun morning and will be off to Chicago. We really appreciate them that they make our stay really comfortable.

遂に、カナダ編が終了し、アメリカ編がスタートしました！カナダでの旅を通し、多くの素晴らしい人々、場所、自然に触れることが出来ました。このような経験がアメリカでも出来たら良いなぁと思っています。ということで、アメリカ編のスタートです！

1. Cora（朝食とランチ専門のレストランチェーン）
私達の良き友人のマイクとソーニャが勧めてくれたレストランチェーンのコラに遂にいくことが出来ました！このレストランは元々は、ケベックから始まったレストランで、カナダ東部では非常に成功しているレストランチェーンです。また、最近ではカナダの他地域にも進出してきています。コラにはここ最近10日間ほど、ずっと行きたかったのですが、時間的な問題やスケジュール的な問題でなかなか行けてなかったので、遂に行けて本当に良かったです！ 評判どおりの朝食で非常に良かったです。ただ仮に日本でやるとしたら、ちょっと朝食にしては金額設定が高すぎるかも。

2. アメリカ編スタート！
サーニアというカナダ国境の街を出て、アメリカに入りました！今回の入国は、今までに無いほどフレンドリーな審査官で、非常にスムーズに入国することが出来ました！入国後、ミシガン州を2時間ほどドライブし、友人宅があるアナーバーへと向かいました。友人一家には、到着以来、非常に良くしてもらえて、非常に快適な滞在を過ごすことが出来ています。こちらには日曜の朝まで滞在させてもらって、その後シカゴへと向かう予定です。本当に友人一家には感謝感謝です。

Day 17: Niagara Falls - Niagara Falls, ON and NY

We spent a whole day in Niagara Falls, ON and NY. We did a nice walk in the morning along the river side on the Canada side. Then, we drove to the states. But somehow we got stopped for an hour at the US customs! Luckily we managed to try and visit all the attractions and spots we wanted in the US side. Generally speaking, people say that the Canadian side of the falls is better than the US side. We disagree with that. We think that the Canadian side is so much commercialized but the US side has a lot more nature and parks surrouded by the falls. If you get a chance to come to the falls, we would definitely think that you should (also) try the US side.

Highlights
1. Maid of the Mist
We took the maid of the mist from the US side. It first cruised by the American Falls and finally got by the Canadian Falls. Although we were wearing a poncho, we got soaked because of the mist! The falls were really powerful and impressive. It was so difficult to balance our body because the ship was quite unstable. If you come to the Niagara Falls, this is a MUST attraction you should try!

2.Viewpoint
There are several viewpoints on the US side. We saw the side of the American Falls from the Prospect Park and checked the both American Falls and the Bridal Falls from the Luna Island. Then, we saw the Canadian Falls from the Terrapin Point. We did all of this on foot. Yes, it was a nice walk. Every thing viewpoint was so great and impressive. Although the walk was quite long, we did enjoy walking the path under the coloured leaves.

3.Journey behind the Falls
This is the attraction that you can see behind the Canadian Falls from the 2 viewspots in the tunnels. The falls were just roaring and powerful from there. However, Kumi was a bit dissapointed because she had a high expectation. (Note, this was my 3rd try but once would be enough). Having said that, the view from the deck beside the falls was amazing. We were lucky to see the rainbow from there as well!

本日はナイアガラの滝を１日満喫しました！朝カナダ側を少し散歩した後に、車でレインボーブリッジを渡り、アメリカに入国。入国手続きに１時間弱時間は取られたものの、いくつもあるビューポイントを全て徒歩で制覇しました！よく、ナイアガラの滝はカナダ側がいいと聞きますが、個人的には、観光都市化されているカナダ側より、滝周辺が緑豊かな公園になっていて、散策を楽しめるアメリカ側の方が断然良かったです。今日は間近でナイアガラの滝を見て、改めてナイアガラの滝は凄い迫力だと思い知らされました。

ハイライト：
1.霧の乙女号
アメリカ側から霧の乙女号に乗船しました！まずはアメリカ滝の近くを通過し、クライマックスはカナダ滝の滝壺近くまで接近！とにかく水しぶきがすごくて、ポンチョを来てもびしょ濡れになり、滝の轟音と、強風で船も揺れ、立っているのもやっとという感じでとにかく凄い迫力でした。流石有名なだけあって、これは是非とも体験すべきアトラクションでした。

2.ビューポイント
アメリカ側にあるナイアガラの滝のビュースポットは、アメリカ滝を真横から見られるプロスペクト公園の展望台、アメリカ滝とブライダルベール滝に挟まれたルナ島、カナダ滝を真横から見られるテラピンポイントがあり、それら全てを見て回りました。どのビューポイントも大迫力で、徒歩の移動は少し距離がありましたが、辺り一体が綺麗な散策路になっていて、紅葉も美しく、とても充実した時間が過ごせました。

3.ジャーニー・ビハインド・ザ・フォールズ
トンネルに設けられた２箇所ののぞき穴から、ナイアガラの滝の裏側を見ることができるアトラクションで、トンネル内は滝の轟音で包まれ、のぞき穴からは滝が落ちる様子が見れましたが、これはちょっと予想よりのぞき穴が小さく少しがっかり。まぁ安全面など考えると、これが限界なのかなという感じでした。でも、滝壺の真横のバルコニーからは、カナダ滝を間近で見ることができ、（ここでもまたびしょ濡れに。。。）ラッキーな事にとても綺麗な虹もかかり、結果的には大満足でした！

Day 16: Niagara - Toronto, ON - Niagara on the Lake, ON - Niagara Falls, ON

Toronto is a fun city but not a city that attracts travelers like us. Don't get me wrong. It'll be a good city to live and settle for people around our age. But it just does not offer enough tourist attractions that we normally look for. We are generally more satisfied when we visit old cities or any nature surrounded areas such as Canadian Rockies, Great Canyon etc. UNESCO World Heritage is definitely a good measurement where we have good time. Niagara is definitely one of the destinations that we looked forward to visiting during this trip. To start off the Niagara tour, we went to a nice cute town, Niagara on the Lake. Then, we stopped at several wineries and picture spots on the way to Niagara Falls. Overall, it was a good day.

As mentioned, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a cute town located just outside of Niagara falls (30 min by car). The town itself is quite small and a half day would be enough for anyone to look around and really know the town. We stopped at a local gallery "Romance Collection Gallery - http://www.romancecollection.com/. The gallery displays arts painted by only 2 artists, Trisha Romance and Tanya Peterson. They have very different styles and touches but make great paintings. We walked around the main street and purchased a lot of jams - http://www.greavesjams.com/.

2. Winery - http://www.inniskillin.com/
We visited 5 wineries but did tastings at only 3 wineries becasue each one charged for tastings.
Wineries we visited were:

• Stratus: https://www.stratuswines.com/ - Very stylish but pricy. Did not do tastings.
• Peller: http://www.peller.com/niagara/homepage.php - Big winery but again pricy. Did not do tastings.
• Lailey: http://www.laileyvineyard.com/ - We tried 3 wines, all white Riesling etc but were not our type of wines.
• REIF: http://reifwinery.com/ - Did tastings and debated whether or not we purchase late harbest wines. Decision - pass it. No purchase.
• Inniskillin: See the link above - Very famous for ice wines and has Japanese staff (very nice). Purchased 2 bottles - one late harbest and the other ice wine.

Overall, wineries in Niagara-on-the-lake are generally bigger than the ones in Okanagan. Most of the Okanagan wineries offer complimentary tastings but not Niagara-on-the-lake. In terms of wines, we prefer Okanagan. Okanagan wines are richer and have more flavours to enjoy.

3. Niagara Falls (First Look & Light Up) - http://www.niagarafalls.ca/
Finally, we arrived at the falls. It was so easy to feel even 5 km away because of the mist up in the sky. We enjoyed the night view as well as the evening view.

トロントは楽しい街ですが、僕たちみたいな旅行人向きの街ではありません。誤解を招かないように言うと、多分僕たち位の年齢の人たちが住むとしたら非常に良い街だろうと思いますが、単純に僕たちが求めているものがそこには無いというのが現実です。僕達は、旅行をする上で古い都市を訪れたり、自然に触れる事で非常に満足します。ユネスコの世界遺産がある種ものさしです。ナイアガラは今回の旅行の中でも特に楽しみにしていた目的地の一つです。ナイアガラツアーを始めるにあたって、まずは可愛らしい街ナイアガラ－オン－ザ－レイクに行ってました。その後、いくつかのワイナリーに止まってテイスティングしたり、写真を何箇所で撮ったりしながらナイアガラの滝に向かいました。総じて言うと、良い一日でした。

ハイライト：1. ナイアガラ－オン－ザ－レイク
ナイアガラ－オン－ザ－レイク は本当に可愛らしい街で、ナイアガラの滝から30分程度のドライブで行けます。街自体は半日もあれば充分見て回れるサイズです。滞在中には、地元のアーティストのギャラリーや、ナイアガラ－オン－ザ－レイクで作られているジャムやさんに行ってきました。

2. ワイナリー
計5つのワイナリーを訪れましたが結局3つのワイナリーでしかテイスティングをしませんでした。というのもテイスティングにも結構なお金が取られたので。。。

僕達が訪れたワイナリーについては、上記英語版を確認ください。

全体としては、ナイアガラ－オン－ザ－レイク にあるワイナリーはオカナガンにあるものに比べ大規模でした。また、オカナガンのワイナリーでは、ほぼ無料で行ってくれていたテイスティングがナイアガラでは課金されるというのも大きな違いでした。ワインとしてもオカナガンのものの方が僕たちの口にはあっているような気がします。オカナガンのワインのほうがリッチでフレイバーに富んでいるというのが僕達の意見です。

3. ナイアガラの滝
遂にナイアガラの滝に着きました！おそらく5km先からでも滝があるんだろうなぁと分かるほどの霧が上空高くたちこめていました。夕方と夜の両方の眺めを楽しむことができました！

Day 15: Diversity - Kingston, ON - Toronto, ON

We left for Toronto early in the morning. Our plan to stay in Toronto was just one day so we started looking around downtown as soon as we arrived in Toronto.Kumi is so passinate about checking as many places as possible so you can probably guess how our day was. We purchased one day TTC pass and went one sightseeing spot to another. The languages we heard and people we saw on the street were quite a few and different. What a multi-nationality city Toronto is!

This was the 5th legislative building we saw during our trip after BC, SK, MB and QC. Kumi has been achieving her mission nicely.



2. Toronto Island - http://www.toronto.ca/parks/island/
We decided to go to the island instead of going up the CN tower. (CN tower is overpriced we think.) The view from the island is so popular and used in many post cards etc. The ride was just 10 min and the island was so quiet because it was a thanksgiving day!. We enjoyed the view and took good pictures from there!

3. Kensington Market (http://www.kensington-market.ca/Default.asp?id=1&l=1) & Ethnic Town -
Kensington market was so colorful and was fun to just walk around. There are about 10 -15 shops that sell used clothes there.

After walking around the market, we started checking ethnic towns. First we checked China town and then Korea town. We had dinner at a restaurant in Korea town. That was so good!

今日は朝一にトロントへ向けて出発。トロントは１泊の予定なので、大急ぎでダウンタウンを見て回りました。ダウンタウンの観光地全てを網羅すべく、地下鉄、バス、路面電車共通の１デイパスを利用して、あとはとにかく歩り、メインのものはほぼ全て見る事が出来ました。さすが多民族都市トロント。白人、黒人、アジア人、その他にも色々な国の人がいて、様々な言語が飛び交い、非常に面白い都市でした。

この旅で、私達の住むブリティッシュコロンビア州を含め、サスカチュワン州、マニトバ州、ケベック州、オンタリオ州の州議事堂と、オタワの国会議事堂の写真を撮る事が出来ました！

2．トロント島
CNタワーに登ってトロントの街を見下ろすのはちょっと値段が高かったので、代わりにオンタリオ湖に浮かぶトロント島からトロントの町を眺めることにしました。乗船時間僅か１０分くらいでトロント島に。トロント島は島全体がのんびりした公園になっていて、そこからのダウンタウンの景色はなかなかグッド！しっかり写真撮ってきましたー！

3．ケンジントン・マーケット＆エスニックタウン
ケンジントン・マーケットは色々な国の古着の服屋が集まる通りで、カラフルな店が並び、歩いて見ているだけで楽しいところでした。色々な国のエスニックタウン、全部回るには時間がなかったので、チャイナタウンとコリアンタウンに行きました。とても活気のあるエリアで夕飯は、ダッカルビを頂きました。とても美味しかったです。

Day 14: Why Kingston? - Deschambault-Grondines (Comté de Portneuf), QC - Kingston, ON,

Some of our good friends have asked us "why are you stopping by Kingston?"
Of course, we had our answers:
1. Kingston has a lot of good history and therefore has a lot of spots to visit.
2. Kingston would be a good halfway point between Quebec or Montreal and Toronto.
However, we have to say that our friends were right. We should have gone to Toronto straight becasue today wasn't just a good day for us! We did BBQ at the Macdonald memorial park where we saw the statue of the first prime minister Macdonald but apparently we did not have enough propane gas to do it. All the stores closed so early because today was thanksgiving day! In terms of driving, it was so smooth so we would have gone to Toronto so easily.

Highlight:
1. Kingston - As briefly mentioned above, we visited the Macdonald memorial park which was quite nice. We also stopped by the city hall where it used to be the first parliament building in Canada. One thing we could not do while we were in Kingston was "Cruise". The popular 1000 island cruise would have been nice if we did.

それに対する僕たちの答えは、
１．キングストンは歴史的に意味のある都市で、沢山の観光名所がある。
2.キングストンは、ケベックシティもしくはモントリオールからトロントに行く際に丁度良いストップのポイントとなる。
といった感じでしたが、結果的には、彼らが正しかったようです。今日はただ単純に良い日じゃなかったみたいです。というのも、マクドナルド記念公園でBBQディナーをしようとしたのですが、持ってきていたプロパンガスがなくなり、冷たいディナーを食べる羽目に。。。また、今日はカナダの感謝祭ウィークエンド、ほぼ全ての店が早くしまってしまい、街が非常に静かでした。ここにストップせずに頑張ってトロントまでいくべきでした。

ハイライト：
1. キングストン－簡単に上記しましたが、マクドナルド記念公園に訪れました。公園自体は非常に良かったです。それ以外にも、当初カナダ最初の国会議事堂であった現キングストンの市庁舎（ちなみにキングストンはカナダ最初の首都です）。唯一行えなかったのが、サウザンアイランドクルーズです。これはサウザンアイランドドレッシングの名前のもとにもなっているオンタリオ湖に浮く沢山の島々をめぐる乗船ツアーです。

Day 9: Capital City - Eganville, ON - Ottawa, ON - Gatineau, QC

We are now in the capital city, Ottawa! All the sightseeing spots we wanted see are located in downtown so we decided to walk around and check the spots. But the parking fee was a bit expensive compared to the places we have been.

Highlights:

The building was massive and attracted a lot of tourists. The view from the core part of the building "Peace Tower" was great and we saw a lot of coloured trees. The interior was well done as well.

2. Rideau Canel - http://www.rideau-info.com/canal/

This UNESCO world heritage "24 water gates" control the water level and allow ships to get into the rideau river. We both thought that we would take a lot of time to use (very time consuming!) I hope that the attached picture tell you the difference in water levels between the 2 gates.

3. Notre-Dam Cathedral - http://www.notredameottawa.com/

The oldest cathedral in Canada located near downtown. The more popular Notre-Dam Cathedral in Montreal is up on next!

4. ByWard Market - http://www.byward-market.com/

Very popular local market that offers a lot from grocery to restaurants. Although there were many people and stuff there, we did not buy anything. If we lived in Ottawa, we would have bought a lot though!

観光施設はダウンタウンに集中しているので、徒歩で散策。都市だけあって、駐車場代は高かった。。。車を停めて無料で見れる観光スポット見尽くしツアー決行

ハイライト：

1.国会議事堂

さすがに国会議事堂は大きくとても重厚。観光客も沢山いて議事堂の中央にあるピースタワーからは紅葉した町全体が見渡せ、議事堂内はステンドグラスが施されてとても綺麗でした。

2. リドー運河

24もある水門を開閉して水の水位を調整しながら船を進ませるシステムは世界遺産。でもいちいち手動で門を開いてという作業は時間もかかるし大変だなぁ。写真で門と門の間で水位が違うの分かるかな？

３．ノートルダム宮殿

ダウンタウンからすぐのオタワにある最古の教会。ケベックにもノートルダム宮殿があるので両方制覇予定。

4.バイワードマーケット

色んなグロッサリーが売られていて、人通りも多いマーケット。特に買うものは無かったけど、活気があって、近くには雰囲気のいい飲食店もあってなかなかお勧め。

Day 8: Algonquin Park - North Bay, ON - Eganville, ON

It’s been a week since we started this trip. We finally got to one of the best sightseeing places in autumn, Algonquin Provincial Park. It was the opener of the tour de Eastern Canada and beautiful autumn leaves.

Highlights:

1. Huntsville - http://www.huntsville.ca/
   

Huntsville is known as the hub for the Algonquin Park tour and the host city for the G8 2010. The town was quite small and had a good lookout called Lion’s Lookout where we saw a beautiful view of the town.

2. Algonquin Provincial Park - http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/
   

Algonquin Provincial Park is well known park for coloured leaves. We’ve decided to go to one of the most popular trails called Lookout trails that we got the information from the information centre. This trail was only 1.9km long and had a great lookout. The view from the lookout was marvellous. The picture tells you how many different colours of trees and a lake we saw from the lookout. We had a great refreshing hike.

3. B&B

We stayed at a B&B in a small city called Evganville, ON. The house was built over a hundred years ago. The hosts were a friendly lady, Terry and a cat, Mr. Boggins. Although the house was a bit cold (because it was a big house), we had a good stay there!

１．ハンツビル

ハンツビルはアルゴンキンパーク観光の拠点並びに、今年のG８サミットの開催地として知られています。街自体は非常に小さくこじんまりとしていますが、ライオンズルックアウトと呼ばれる見晴台からの眺めは非常に美しかったです。

2．アルゴンキン州立公園

紅葉の名所として有名なアルゴンキンパークへ。この公園はとにかく広いので、インフォメーションセンターで聞いたお勧めスポット１つを選び、１周1.9キロとお手ごろのハイキングコースを選択。最後に展望が開けるルックアウトからの眺めはときかく綺麗！何種類の色にも紅葉した木々と遠く湖が見渡せ、すばらしい景色でした。ハイキングコースも美しく、快適なハイキングでした。

3．B&B

エガンビルというとても小さな町のB&Bに滞在。築１００年以上というこのお宅はノスタルジックな雰囲気で、お婆ちゃんとMr.Bogginsという猫ちゃんがお出迎え。家はちょっと寒かったけど素敵な滞在でした。

Day 7: Comfortable Stay - Sault Ste Marie, ON - North Bay, ON

We had relatively short drive today (less than 500km) so we arrtive at the B&B quite early at around 4:30 p.m. This gave us enough time to cook good dinner and enjoy being at the quiet property.

1. BBQ Dinner - We bbqed salmon and cooked pasta outside. This was so nice and a perfect meal with good Beer!

2. B&B - We were so fortunate to stay here. The host was so welcoming and friendly. We really appreciated the hospitality. In addition, the price was very reasonable ($80/night for 2ppl - this includes full breakfast and hot tub etc) Highly recommended.

ハイライト：
1. BBQディナー　－　B&Bのオーナーが親切で無料でBBQセットを使わせてもらえました。ということで、今夜はサーモンとパスタを料理し、ビールと一緒にいただきました。やっぱり外で食べる料理は最高！

２．B&B　－　本当にすばらしいB&Bでした。料金も＄８０/2人と安く、ジャグジーにも入ることが出来、幸せな気分を味わえました。朝食も凄くしっかりしていて、食べきれないほどでした。なかなか戻ってくる機会はないかもしれませんが、もしあれば先に挙げた何箇所かのB&B同様、是非戻ってきたいとB&Bです。

Day 6: Pastel - Thunder Bay, ON - Sault Ste Marie, ON

We had a fantastic 8 hours drive today! Although it was raining when we started it, it cleared out by the lunch time. We drove by one of the 5 great lakes "Lake Superior" and saw beautiful colored trees all the way. It was just like a pastel created by the nature!

Highlights:
1. B&B in Thunder Bay (Country Cozy B&B)
It is located outside of Thunder Bay. The hosts were really nice and kind. We were so lucky to get an upgrade for free because their sons happened to be back there at the same time. We just paid $65/night that included great breakfast "Saskatoon Berry Maffin, Pancakes!" Also, the room had refrege, microwave etc. If you want to visit this area, this is the place you should really think about staying!

2. Outdoor Dinner
We luckily arrived at the B&B in Sault Ste Marie today, we decided to cook outside! (Thanks Mike for the propane set!)We grilled sausages and cooked some soup. We ate them with rice balls. We really enjoyed the meal in a great outside setting.

1．B&B
サンダーベイの田舎にあるB&B。とにかく親切なホスト。たまたま息子さんが帰郷していうからという理由でスイート並みの極上ルームにたったの６５ドルで１泊させてくれました。部屋は広くで綺麗で冷蔵庫も完備。朝はサスカチューンベリーマフィン・パンケーキ、最高のサービスでした！

2.アウトドアクッキング
今日は早めに宿に着いたので、近くの公園でアウトドアクッキング。といってもおにぎりと、あとはソーセージを焼いて野菜のスープを作るだけ。それでも眺めのいい公園で自分たちで料理した料理は格別。
